The Hawaiian island chain is comprised of 137 islands, but there are eight (8) main Hawaiian Islands (listed south to north): Hawai`i (The Big Island), Maui , Kaho’olawe (uninhabited, temporary residential facilities), Lana`i, Moloka`i, O`ahu, Kaua`i,and Ni`ihau.

Hawai`i: The Island of Hawaii (Simply called ‘The Big Island’) is home to two active volcanoes, ancient petroglyphs, sweeping ranchlands, rainforests, wonderful deep-sea fishing off its coast and lush resort areas. The Big Island is not known for expansive beaches, but boasts of the most spectacular sights of new lava flow.

Maui : Maui whose name means “The Valley Isle” is an incredible blend of modernism and old Hawaiiana. Maui is bustling with industrial activity but retains its small town charm. The beauty of the island is characterized by the blend of enticing luxury resort areas, lush tropical rainforests and breath-taking sights from Haleakaela – with a summit of over 10,000 feet!

Hawaii State FlagKaho’olawe: Kaho’olawe whose name means “ The Target Isle” is the smallest of the 8 main volcanic Hawaiian Islands . The island was used for live military fire training, which has now ceased. Clean up of the island is currently underway.

Lana`i: Lana`i is part of Maui County , and is also known as the Pineapple Isle because of its past island-wide pineapple cultivation (home of Dole Pineapple). As the pineapple industry was phased out, tourism increased and two resort hotels emerged in the Sleepy town of Lana `i City. Golf, miles of white sandy beaches, and water sports are the amenities on this island.

Moloka`i: The “Friendly Isle” of Molokai is also a part of Maui County and is one of the least developed islands in Hawaii . Molokai is known for its many fish ponds and is the oldest site for leprosy patients.

Oahu : Oahu whose name means “The Gathering Place” is the most populous island and offers beautiful golf courses, spectacular hiking trails, panoramic vistas, intriguing historical points of interest, museums, and Hawaii State Birdbeautiful white sand beaches all abound on the island. The state capital of Honolulu is on the Island of Oahu.

Kaua`i: “The Garden Isle” is the most lush and beautiful amongst the Hawaiian Island Chain. Kauai is home to sweeping vistas, fertile gardens, a state park and a Hawaiian version of “The Grand Canyon.”

Ni`ihau: “The Forbidden Isle” has been off limits to the public up until recently (Only invited guests, government dignitaries and military personnel were allowed on this 70 square mile island). Now a number of supervised tours are available which include hiking, diving and hunting safaris.
