Rich in history dating back to early colonial times, New York State occupies a unique place in national as well as global affairs. New York City, located in the southeastern corner of the state, is considered by many to be the financial and cultural capital of the world. In the high powered financial district surrounding Wall Street, billions of dollars in transactions happen every minute and further north in midtown, the world famous Broadway theatre
district attracts visitors from around the world. Lining the landmark Central Park are renowned museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim museum and the Museum of Natural History. Although most think of New York City consisting of only Manhattan, there are also four other boroughs which complete the city, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.
The five boroughs of New York City are as diverse as any locale thanks to the city’s being the main entry point on the eastern seaboard for immigrants from around the world. The population of the city consists of ex-patriots of many countries and is aptly called “the great melting pot.”
Outside of New York City, the state is vast and varied and extends up to the Canadian border to the north and the Great Lakes to the west. Just north of the city lies the historic Hudson Valley which
lines the majestic Hudson River. Filled with many historic Revolutionary War sites and battlegrounds it’s easy to understand why the United States Military Academy at West Point is such a popular tourist destination.
The state capital, Albany sits on the Hudson at the northern end of the valley and is the gateway to the rest of the state. To the north of Albany lie the Adirondack Mountains which are home to vast forests and serves many outdoors activities including hunting, fishing, camping, hiking and skiing. West of Albany includes a diverse mix of cities and towns including Syracuse (home of the states largest university, Syracuse University), Binghamton and Buffalo. Just outside of Buffalo is the famous Niagara Falls which is bisected by the U.S.-Canadian border.
The state’s higher education ranks second to none. Prestigious private universities include New York
University and Columbia University in New York City and Vassar, Colgate and Cornell Universities in upstate New York. A highly regarded public State University of New York system includes dozens of campuses throughout the state which offer a diversity of curriculums at a very affordable tuition rate. With such a highly regarded education system it’s no wonder that New York State is home to more Fortune 500 companies than any other state, according to Fortune magazine. IBM, Citigroup, Altria, Pfizer, JP Morgan Chase, Time Warner, Verizon, Pepsico, Time Warner, and American Express are just some of the corporate giants that count New York State as their home.
“I Love New York” is the official slogan of the New York State Department of Tourism and is adopted by many who visit or relocate to the Empire State.
